FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL

August 28th, 2008

We’ve gotten off to a great start. We began our study of the Age of Exploration and Discovery. We are learning about the lives and ideas of 15th Century Europeans.  What motivated people to risk their lives and endure great physical and mental challenges to explore the seas? What did they hope to find? Who were these explorers and how did their discoveries change history forever? How did exploration lead to the establishment of the United States? How did it change the lives of Native Americans? Of Europeans? Along with finding out the answers to these questions, we are studying some geography, reading maps and learning some important map skills.  We also began reading our first novel of the year: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.  It’s a wonderfully written book with an exciting plot. We will be going to the library to begin independent reading tomorrow, Friday.
